Compacting File Space
When you delete a file from a memory card, the file and its data become
inaccessible and eventually occupy all remaining storage space on that card. Use
the
compact
command to:
• Copy active files to memory.
• Erase the card’s contents.
• Copy the active files back to the memory card.
If responses to the
dir
or
dinfo
commands reveal more free space than contiguous
free space on a memory card, compacting the space on the card increases the
contiguous free space.
Enter the following to erase the memory card contents and rewrite its files, where
<vol>
is the slot number of the card:
compact
<vol>
:
The following message appears:
Compacting file system on volume <vol>:...
This may take several minutes...Please wait...
100% Complete
Compaction completed
The space is compacted when the Technician Interface prompt reappears.
Formatting a Memory Card
Use the
format
command to erase all files on a memory card and format it, where
<vol> is the slot number of the card:
format
<vol>
:
Use the
format
command to format new memory cards if you do not obtain them
from Nortel Networks.
Caution:
Back up the files by copying them to a second memory card before
issuing the
compact
command.
